Individual Counseling

We provide a variety of professional counseling services hypnotherpy EMDR video counseling.  Our treatment philosophy is that each person is different and every problem is different. Therefore, we assess each individual’s strengths, challenges, and goals before developing a treatment plan. Information and a rationale for each strategy, treatment option, or referral is always provided, and you are encouraged to ask questions and address any concerns prior to your agreement to engage in counseling or a specifically recommended treatment.

The first session gives us an opportunity to meet with you to get your initial questions and concerns answered, gives you the opportunity to get to know us and our services. Your counselor will do an initial assessment and provide you with feedback and suggestions at the end of the session. At that point, if a mutually agreeable therapeutic relationship is established, we will go ahead and schedule follow-up sessions. The frequency of sessions is determined by mutual agreement, and takes into consideration factors including safety, urgency, crisis management, finances, and your flexibility in scheduling.

All information is kept strictly confidential, unless you sign a document providing your consent for the release of all or specific information. (Notable exceptions to this law include the required disclosure to appropriate authorities of any known or suspected child or elder abuse, the imminent threat of violence to yourself or someone else, and a court order requiring the submission of such information.) We will file all insurance paperwork necessary for us to receive payment that is in addition to any copay, percentage, or deductible for which you are responsible. We will also cooperate in the completion of needed notes, letters, disability statements, and return-to-work forms. Note that we do not provide forensic services, including preparing risk assessments and formal, court-ordered evaluations.

Couples Counseling

Our treatment philosophy is that each couple is different and every problem is different. Therefore, we assess each couple’s strengths, challenges, and goals before developing a treatment plan. Information and a rationale for each strategy, treatment option, or referral is always provided, and you are encouraged to ask questions and address any concerns prior to your agreement to engage in counseling or a specifically recommended treatment. We believe that effective couples counseling can only occur if both parties experience a positive connection with the counselor.

The first session gives us an opportunity to meet with both of you to get your initial questions and concerns answered, and gives you the opportunity to get to know us and our services. Your counselor will do an initial assessment and provide you with feedback and suggestions by the end of the session.

(Notable exceptions to this law include the required disclosure to appropriate authorities of any known or suspected child or elder abuse, the imminent threat of violence to yourself or someone else, and a court order requiring the submission of such information.) Couples counseling is often covered under an employee’s EAP program, and is generally paid for by the employer for a limited number of sessions. If you are covered under such a program, we will file all paperwork necessary for us to receive payment for your sessions. Note that we do not provide forensic services, including preparing risk assessments and formal, court-ordered evaluations.

Insurance plans rarely cover marital or couples counseling, except when an individual is being treated for a diagnosed mental illness, and it is deemed necessary to include the spouse in treating that individual.  Therefore, most marital and couples counseling is paid out-of-pocket.

Employee Assistance Plans – EAP Counseling

We contract with EAP programs to provide services to covered employees (and their families) of many local, state, and national companies, organizations, and governmental departments. Most EAP plans permit self-referral to counseling by the covered employee or family member. These plans facilitate brief counseling for most types of problems, and can include the individual covered under the plan, both spouses, the covered person and a significant other, and one or more other family members. Coverage is also utilized by employers to make mandatory referrals of employees as a condition of continued employment where personal problems are having a detrimental affect on attendance, performance, or work relationships.

The first session gives us an opportunity to meet with you to get your initial questions and concerns answered, and gives you the opportunity to get to know us and our services. Your counselor will do an initial assessment and provide you with feedback and suggestions at the end of the session. At that point, if a mutually agreeable therapeutic relationship is established, and if further counseling is needed, we will go ahead and schedule follow-up sessions. The frequency of sessions is determined by mutual agreement, and takes into consideration factors including safety, urgency, crisis management, and any requirements that may be specified in a mandatory counseling referral.

All information is kept strictly confidential, unless you sign a document providing your consent for the release of all or specific information. (Notable exceptions to this law include the required disclosure to appropriate authorities of any known or suspected child or elder abuse, the imminent threat of violence to yourself or someone else, and a court order requiring the submission of such information.)

EAP session fees are normally paid in full by the employer with no cost to you. If you are covered under such a program, we will file all paperwork necessary for us to receive payment for your sessions. Note that we do not provide forensic services, including preparing risk assessments and formal, court-ordered evaluations.

SPECIAL NOTICE:  January 1, 2017 marked the start of a new era in mental health care as a new Washington law will require many health plans to cover telehealth mental health services for their insureds.  Beginning January 1, 2018, all those insured by the Blue Cross/Blue Shield Federal Employee Plan will have access to video counseling.  If you are interested in doing counseling from your home or office or anywhere in the world on your computer, tablet, or smart phone, check your coverage. There is no additional cost to you for this service.  Please contact the phone number on your insurance card to verify that your specific plan does include the telehealth mental health counseling benefit, and provide us with the name of phone number of the representative with whom you have spoken.  We are also accepting clients for telehealth video and telephonic counseling by private pay.

We have a strong interest in providing convenient methods of counseling over the phone and Internet if you are a client who prefers to talk in the privacy of your home or office or while traveling. This service allows for more flexible scheduling for those who are unable to come in during regular business hours, are located far from my office, or who simply prefer the convenience and cost savings of time and transportation.  Sessions may sometimes be scheduled on evenings, weekends, and some holidays, subject to availability.

Whether paying out-of-pocket or using your insurance coverage, this service is only available through prepayment by cash or check, or by all credit, debit, and HSA cards provided before or at the time of service.  I will also accept a letter or email request to keep your card information on file, if you do not wish to provide it at–or before–each session.   All video sessions will be confirmed by email. For a phone session (not covered by insurance), you will be given the date, time, and phone number to call. For a video session, you will be emailed instructions prior to your first session on downloading and using the free video software, and given the date and time of the session.

These electronic sessions can be utilized for individuals, couples, families, friends, and business associates.  The participant(s) may utilize the service from one or multiple locations.  In preparation for a first session, each participant is required to read, complete, and submit the required documents in Steps 1-4 on the Appointments page.

Addiction Counseling

Our treatment philosophy is that most people have an undesirable habit or addiction they want to end or get under better control. Each person is different and so every habit and addiction problem has different causes and psychological and environmental influences.

Our experience includes treatment for a variety of addictions, including smoking, drinking, recreational and prescription drugs, gambling, eating, Internet, and codependency (the addiction to unhealthy and destructive relationships). For those who have been in treatment or have ended an addiction on their own, we offer relapse prevention counseling to bolster confidence and provide strategies for continuing success.

Note that we are not a certified drug and alcohol treatment program, and do not employ certified drug counselors. If you are needing classes or intensive outpatient treatment, including that required by a court after a DWI/DUI or domestic violence incident, or prior outpatient treatment attempts have failed and you are needing residential treatment, you are encouraged to check with your health insurance carrier to get information on contracted providers who can provide those services.

Note that we do not provide forensic services, including preparing legal or formal risk assessments and court-ordered evaluations

Hypnotherapy

This is another natural, powerful, and safe psychotherapy that enables us to temporarily shift your mind into a state of consciousness that is particularly open to suggestion and change. There are many potential benefits for its use in therapeutic treatment, including enhanced control over habits and addictions, increased confidence, better self-esteem, increased motivation, and better sleep.  The clinical use of hypnosis is very different from the “stage hypnosis” with which many people have become familiar. During our therapeutic use, you are fully conscious of everything said and everything going on around you. Sufficient preparation is completed beforehand, so that you fully understand the process and know what to expect during the induction process, while you are in the trance state, and the return to your fully conscious state. Only positive hypnotic suggestions are used, and we work only on areas with which we have agreed in advance.

Stop Smoking 2/2/2 Program

2 WEEKS

2 INDIVIDUAL SESSIONS UTILIZING HYPNOSIS

2 HUNDRED DOLLARS

Yes, that’s all it takes to permanently stop smoking or chewing tobacco. We are very pleased to offer this highly successful program that we have developed and refined over the past 30 years. Most people are surprised at how well the program works, and many find that it is much easier to stop than they ever thought possible.  The program employs a combination of techniques that assure your success by:

  1. mentally preparing you to stop the habit/addiction
  2. programming your mind to embrace, accept, and facilitate your decision to stop
  3. providing advice and emotional support 24/7 during the process
  4. offering strategies to help break habits and patterns associated with smoking
  5. giving guidance and strategies to foster successful, long-term maintenance

Smoking cessation services are not normally covered under most health insurance benefits. Payment for the program is due in full at the first session, the day you will become a nonsmoker. It is suggested that you make your first appointment at least five days ahead, as you are given a mental exercise to complete prior to coming in for treatment. We continue to successfully use hypnosis to assist clients to break this powerful addiction, and go through a full explanation of the process and what you will experience prior to any hypnotic work being done. You are conscious and aware of all hypnotic suggestions being given during the process, and maintain complete control.

EMDR

(Eye Movement, Desensitization, and Reprocessing)

This is a natural and powerful psychotherapy that utilizes the mind and body’s own resources to process and heal from various types of trauma that cause depression, anxiety, panic, anger, irritability, mood swings, physical problems, addictions, chronic pain, behavioral problems, and sleep problems. The treatment is effective with adults and children, and is a covered treatment under most insurance plans.

The treatment involves a process whereby we induce a rapid eye movement not unlike what happens when you go into a deep sleep and enter into REM (rapid eye movement), although you are fully awake and aware throughout the process. The treatment works on conscious, subconscious, and unconscious levels, and often produces results more rapidly and effectively than conventional talk therapy.

The treatment is now internationally recognized, and has been embraced by the Veterans Administration and Department of Defense as a useful treatment for post-traumatic stress, anxiety, depression, anger, and sleep problems common to veterans who return from deployment to a combat zone.
